Wagner's ever-popular Siegfried Idyll
opens our Memories of Spring concert. It was written as a love poem and as a thanksgiving to his wife, Cosima,
for the birth of their son, Siegfried. It was performed on the stairs of the Wagner household on Christmas morning,
Cosima's 33rd birthday.
We are delighted and fortunate to welcome the trumpeter Mark Bennett,
who joins us to perform not one, but two concertos. Mark's own recording of Haydn's famous concerto is frequently
played on Classic FM, and will not fail to delight. By contrast, he will also perform Panufnik's Concerto in modo antico.
A little-known work, it was adapted from a film score written a few years earlier. Based mainly on old Polish tunes,
it is charming in its simplicity.
Schumann's uplifting Spring symphony closes this concert. It was
written in the depths of winter and was inspired by poetry. The whole work exhales the fresh, crisp, exhilarating and
yet balmy breath of springtime. It is full of love and merriment, and perfectly titled.
